Diabetes: Managing Diabetes Checklist - Diabetes Relief & Remedies

As well as medication, there are many ways to manage diabetes:

Eat more healthily

Generally, eating more healthily doesn’t mean that you need to follow any special type of diets. Following a sensible diet is key- that is a diet that is high in fibre, fresh fruits, low in salt and sugar with a health smattering of fresh vegetables!

As is often the case, a dietician will provide you with a breakdown of what you should eat, as well as dietary plan to follow.

Regular Exercise

Physical activity can decrease the blood glucose level, so it is crucial to exercise regularly if you have diabetes.

Let others know about your Diabetes

Should you collapse, wearing an identity bracelet will let others know that you have diabetes

Don’t smoke!

If you smoke, you increase the risk of developing a cardiovascular illness.  This coupled with diabetes, will increase the risk even more

Drink alcohol in moderation

It is important to monitor your consumption of alcohol.  You should only ever drink alcohol in moderation.  Alcohol can cause high blood glucose or low blood glucose levels.

Look after your feet

If you suffer from Diabetes, you are more likely to develop infection and ulcers of the foot. It is important that you take care of your feet and ensure that your feet are clean, toe nails are kept short and that shoes fit properly.

Get your Eyes Tested on a Regular Basis

For those with Type 1 Diabetes, it is important to get your eyes tested about once a year for Retinopathy.  This is an eye condition where the small blood vessels in your eye become damaged and can occur if your blood glucose level is too high for a long period of time.
