Migraine: Migraine Treatment - Migraine Prevention

Whilst there are no cures for migraine, there are a range of migraine treatments available to alleviate the symptoms of migraine.

Over the Counter Treatments

Many painkillers that can be bought over the counter can help against migraines and are usually taken in the first instance in light of a migraine attack. 

Anti-Inflammatory Medicines

Medicines such as ibuprofen can be very effective in treating migraines.

Anti-Sickness Medication

If a feeling of sickness or nausea is one of the symptoms of migraine, anti-sickness medication can be used along with painkillers.

Triptan medicines

If over the counter medication don’t work, Triptan medicines are the next type of medication to use.  Unlike painkillers, the Triptan medicines will make the blood vessels around the brain contract and in doing so, stops the widening of the blood vessels that are often associated with the migraine process.

Complementary Treatments

Many people consider the use of complementary treatments such as acupuncture and homeopathy to ease the migraine condition. There are many types of complementary therapies out there such as :

  1. Acupuncture- the insertion of fine needles into the skin at certain points
  2. Homeopathy- a system of healing which assists the natural tendency of the body to heal itself
  3. Manipulative Therapies- includes osteopathy, physiotherapy and reflexology
  4. Physical Therapies- such as relaxation
  5. Vitamins, Minerals and Food Supplements- to help treat nausea and prevent attacks
  6. Herbal Remedies- combining plants to reduce attacks
  7. Allergy Tests- tests to find out about produce that brings about an allergic reaction or if migraines are triggered by certain types of food.

Preventative Treatments

Much medication is available to prevent a migraine attack.  These include:

  1. Beta Blockers- originally developed to treat high blood pressure; beta blockers can work to prevent migraine attacks
  2. Antidepressants- some antidepressants, in low doses, have been shown to work against migraines
  3. Anticonvulsants- like some antidepressants, some anticonvulsants have been found to prevent migraines
  4. Serotonin agonists- are known to reduce the severity and frequency of attacks in about one third of sufferers
