Diabetes: Type 1 Diabetes & Type 2 Diabetes
Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is caused by the body's inability to produce insulin. The amount of sugar in the blood is controlled by a hormone called insulin, which is produced by the pancreas. When food is digested and enters the bloodstream, insulin helps to move any glucose out of the blood and into cells, where it is broken down to produce energy. Type 1 is sometimes known as juvenile diabetes as it normally appears before the age of 40.
Type 2 Diabetes
The most common form of diabetes, Type 2 diabetes occurs when not enough insulin is produced by the body for it to function properly- this is also known as insulin resistance.
Type 2 diabetes is by far the more common type of diabetes; with statistics showing that around 90% of all diabetes is within this group.
